Afghan Ambassador nostalgic about an Afghanistan that used to be “full of hope”

KABUL - Although Afghanistan has suffered through years of war, the Afghan people prove that the spirit of Afghanistan is still very much alive.

This is the message the Afghanistan Ambassador to the United Nations Mr. Zahir Tanin walked away with after attending an opening reception for a new photography exhibition at the United Nations entitled “Afghanistan: Everyday in the midst of conflict.”

Ambassador Tanin said that the photographs, which show Afghans going about their daily lives in one of the world’s most dangerous places, give a human face to a country that is usually talked about in terms of victimhood, war, and terrorism.

Radmilla Suleymanova asked the Ambassador which images stood out for him and whether any of them touched him personally.

The “Afghanistan: Everyday in the midst of conflict” exhibition is currently on display at the United Nations Visitors Lobby in New York though July 30, 2011.
