Providing 'good offices' is at the forefront of UNAMA's mandate-driven activities.
At the forefront of UNAMA’s work is the provision of outreach and ‘good offices’ – which involves high-level mediation and is sometimes described as preventive diplomacy or conflict prevention -- to support the Government of Afghanistan as it assumes full leadership and ownership in the security, governance and development areas.
UNAMA utilises its good offices in support of Afghanistan’s increasing engagement with the region and its efforts to strengthen regional cooperation. The United Nations supports the government’s National Priority Programmes, leading and coordinating international civilian efforts.
UNAMA is mandated by the UN Security Council to support, if requested and in consultation with the Government of Afghanistan, the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned process of peace and reconciliation.
