URUZGAN: Tribal leaders vow not to grow poppy

URUZGAN - During their meeting with the Uruzgan Provincial Governor, Amir Mohammad Akhunzada, tribal leaders pledged to grow legal crops instead of poppy in their fields.

“We will not allow anyone to grow poppy in Uruzgan and those who continue growing poppy will face strict punishment,” said Mr. Akhunzada, during the meeting.

The Government is ready to provide improved seeds and other assistance to the farmers and several districts have already received the mentioned assistance, the Governor told the tribal leaders.

“We should prevent poppy cultivation in advance, in order for the farmers to prevent loss from one side and could grow legal crops on the other side,” Akhunzada maintained.

The tribal leaders also requested for improved seeds and fertilizer assistance and promised not to grow poppy in the future.
