UN backs events to promote peace and reconciliation

KANDAHAR - To promote peace and reconciliation at the community level, the United Nations has backed a series of theatre events in various districts of the southern province of Kandahar.

In front of an audience of 150 school children, a group of performers from the Kandahar Film and Theatre Institute conducted dramatic presentations last week in the district of Maiwand, some 50 kilometers from Kandahar City, all focused on the needs and benefits of peace.

The Maiwand performance was one in a multipart series, with the group already having performed the week before for a televised broadcast on International Women’s Day. The group is scheduled to conduct several more performances through the end of March, including in the Arghandab and Shah Wali Kot districts of Kandahar.

In another UN-backed event last week, civil society and media representatives came together in Bamyan province to raise awareness about peace, good governance and women’s rights.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) is mandated by the Security Council to support Afghan peace and reconciliation efforts.
