KABUL: Students, activists stage demonstration against flogging of a girl

PAKTYA - Tens of university students, members of the civil society and human rights activists staged a demonstration yesterday condemning the flogging of a 16-year-old girl by community elders and mullahs in Jaghuri district of Ghazni province.

Chanting slogans, the demonstrators marched from Kabul University to the building of the National Assembly and ended by issuing a resolution.

An article of the resolution said the girl, who was accused of having an illicit affair with a local boy, was lashed before the public, but the boy was let go free because he paid money. They also accused the chief of the district of wrongdoing.

The Afghan girl was flogged for allegedly having an affair and her purported boyfriend was fined Afs 80,000 on 9 September in Jaghuri district of Ghazni province.
