  • 19 Sep 2011 - KABUL - UNICEF in Afghanistan is delighted to announce the country’s first National Goodwill Ambassador, famed cricketer Raees Ahmadzai. A former captain of the successful 2009 and 2010 Afghan National Cricket teams, Mr. Ahmadzai’s work with UNICEF - on behalf of the children of Afghanistan - began several years ago through participation in cricket camps for both girls and boys that promote the role of sport in developing positive and healthy childhoods.
  • 10 Sep 2011 - NEW YORK - On the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, the members of the Security Council recalled the heinous attacks which took place that day in New York, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania, resulting in the deaths of nearly 3,000 people from over 90 countries, and the other numerous attacks perpetrated by the Al-Qaida network throughout the world.
  • 05 Sep 2011 - KABUL - "On 9 July, an explosion in the vicinity of a school south of Kabul reportedly killed at least 25 people, including 15 children. This appalling incident follows other attacks in and around schools in Afghanistan that have also resulted in death and injury to children. "UNICEF has recorded 98 school incidents in the period from 1 May until 24 June 2009. Incidents have included direct attacks by small arms and rockets, arson, and threats.
  • 05 Sep 2011 - KABUL - The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is reducing food assistance to millions of Afghans and focusing remaining resources on helping the most vulnerable in areas with the highest levels of food insecurity due to a shortage of funds.
