  • 31 Oct 2011 - NEW YORK - Before we begin, let me say just a few words about the terrorist attack near the UN offices in Kandahar early this morning. As you may know, a car bomb was exploded at the gate of a local NGO that shares a common wall with the UNHCR compound. When the wall collapsed, suicide attackers entered the UN premises. Three UN security guards were killed and two others were wounded. Two security contractors were killed as well.

  • 13 Oct 2011 - KABUL - Opium poppy-crop cultivation in Afghanistan reached 131,000 hectares in 2011, 7 per cent higher than in 2010, due to insecurity and high prices, said the 2011 Afghan Opium Survey released today by the Ministry of Counter Narcotics (MCN) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
