Women stage protest demanding justice and an end to violence against them

GHAZNI - Local women staged a protest yesterday in Ghazni City against growing violence against them and the authorities’ failure to arrest the perpetrators.

The protestors marched from the Provincial Council Office to the Governor's Office and then to the police headquarters, chanting slogans “we want justice and prosecute perpetrators of violence against women". The protestors asked the authorities to punish rapists and kidnappers.

A demonstrator Marzia said, “Women are tortured and sexually abused on a daily basis, but the security apparatus and officials at the Department of Women’s Affairs remain silent.” She also claimed that 13 women had been murdered in violence targeted at them since March 2012 but police hadn’t arrested anyone.

Provincial council member Hamida Gulistani, who also joined the rally, demanded that violators of women’s rights should be punished publicly to deter others from committing such crimes.
