UN-supported documentary series highlight potentials of Afghan provinces

KABUL - A United Nations-produced documentary series highlighting various potentials of Afghanistan’s provinces is being broadcast by one of the country’s leading television channels.

“The series ‘My Beloved Afghanistan’ is about different parts of Afghanistan. “Each documentary explores and highlights the historical and cultural heritage of each of these Afghan provinces, as well as it natural landscapes, but also the cultural identity that makes each citizen of those provinces unique and eclectic,” said the multimedia head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), Shoresh Mostafa Kalantari.

UNAMA and the state broadcaster, Radio Television Afghanistan (RTA), co-produced the series showcasing the provinces of Badakhshan in the north-east, Balkh in the north, Bamyan in the central highlands and Kandahar in the south.

“These documentaries are looking into issues such as culture, economy, women, development and education of these provinces,” said Mr. Kalantari. RTA started broadcasting the series on 13 December.

The latest documentaries – made by young award-winning filmmakers of Afghanistan with financial, technical and editorial support of UNAMA – is the second such project undertaken this year with the UN Mission’s support.

Earlier in the year, the UN Mission helped produce 12 documentaries that explored the last decade of efforts by UN agencies and international community to help Afghanistan rebuild the country and its institutions.

“The documentary series examines the challenges, achievements and failures of these efforts and programmes by focusing on the most important issues such as women, police force, peace, drug, education, human rights, election, health, children, culture and youth,” said Mr. Kalantari, speaking about ‘Afghanistan: Ten Years On’ series.

While renewing the mandate of UNAMA for one more year, the UN Security Council stressed last March the central and impartial role that the UN will play in promoting peace and stability in Afghanistan. The mandate also includes providing capacity building and technical assistance to the Afghan institutions.
