KANDAHAR: ‘Significant achievements made in communication sector’

KANDAHAR - The communications director at the Kandahar Governor’s office, Engineer Shah Mohammad Eshaq, said yesterday that there had been “significant progress” in communication, mobile services and Internet services in the province.

Speaking to local journalists, Mr. Eshaq informed that for the last three to four years, most of the communication services, telephone, assigning of frequencies, internet and other technical things were totally privatized and his department only had the role of monitoring and control.

“We have stopped the selling of unregistered Sim cards in the market and have taken measures to register the unregistered Sim cards and all the mobile companies are serious in this matter. We have seized those equipment, which were functioning illegally and were stealing money from the Sims of the local people,” stated Mr. Eshaq, while talking about the achievement of his department.

While talking about internet services, Mr. Eshaq said that they currently have around 12 internet cafes providing internet services to thousands of local citizens of Kandahar. He also said the provincial Government was trying to expand internet and telephone connections to far flung areas of Kandahar in the future.

Moreover, Mr. Eshaq said the fiber optic cables would soon be extended to Lashkar Gah in neighbouring Helmand province from Kandahar with the financial support of the Kandahar PRT (Provincial Reconstruction Team).
