NANGARHAR: Media reports questioned in Jalalabad

NANGARHAR - A member of the Nuristan provincial council disputed media reports about the number of schools closed in the province due to insecurity. The council’s deputy head said that up to 60 percent of schools had been shut because of security concerns. He accused the provincial government of misleading the media about the security situation and of feeding the media false information.

That Council member, named Rahman, claimed some government officials were involved in giving wrong information to the media to put pressure on the central government and to advance their personal interests.

He claimed some policemen were recently killed in an airstrike, but local officials said that they were insurgents. He claimed to have evidence to support his assertion. He also disputed another official claim that 1,000 insurgents had gathered to attack the Want Waigal district.

All of Rahman's statements were rejected by the governor’s spokesman, Mohammad Zahir Bahand, who said no council member, except Dr. Shams, was living in Nuristan.
