Kunduz religious scholars and elders discuss protection of civilians

KUNDUZ- UNAMA hosted a consultative meeting with the Kunduz religious scholars and community elders on protection of civilians during the armed conflicts.

 The aim of the meeting was to pass the message to communities and sides of armed conflict on better protection of civilians.

“Your role as the religious scholars and elders is vital in protection of civilians, UNAMA needs your support on reduction of civilians casualties,” said Dharmanada Joshi, UNAMA Human Rights Officer.

“Based on UNAMA recently released mid-year report, 1,462 civilians killed during the armed conflicts in the last six months of the current year which shows fifteen per cent increase compared to the same period of the last year,” added Joshi.

Participants highlighted the importance of messaging about the protection of civilians through the mosques’ pulpits. They also emphasized the roles and responsibilities of civil society and human rights associations on the issue.

Based on UNAMA’s released reports, more than 10,000 civilians deaths in armed conflicts recorded during the past four years and the figures show increase in civilians deaths every year.
