KANDAHAR - A public awareness meeting on violence against women was held at the regional office of Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) in Kandahar.

The meeting was attended by the Government officials, prosecutors, elders, commissioner from Kabul AIHRC and civil and military personnel.

The meeting participants discussed about honor killings and sexual abuse and shared their experiences and information about violence against women.

“The purpose of this meeting is entirely to gather views from all sides which include ulamas, teachers, university professors, civil society members, government officials and other interlocutors on honor killings and sexual abuse cases,” stated the head of the juvenile of AIHRC in Kandahar.

The speakers said that such cases are taking place in other provinces of the country mainly due to the 30 years of war, poverty, lack of rule of law and justice and other factors.

In recent years, violence against women has increased in the country and several women have even lost their lives.
