Government reports to the public in Mazar

MAZAR - More than 300 people in Mazar-i-Sharif came out to hear what their government is doing for them. They sat in two long tables facing each other, government officials on one side, provincial council members representing local residents on the other. District representatives, local elders, civil society and media on the side to listen to the questions and answers.

“I do not say there is no corruption in the system, but I say help us clean it up, hear from your government entities, question them and openly give them your constructive suggestions” said Balkh Deputy Governor Mohammad Zahir Wahdat in his opening speech at the 18 October conference.

Financially supported and organized by UNAMA Governance unit a two-day accountability and transparency conference – ‘Mid-Year Hearing Meeting of the Provincial Council’ today where heads of all government departments will showcase their achievements and plans for the coming six months to the Afghan public.

“I find it an excellent opportunity to bring people closer to their government,” Balkh Provincial Council Chief Dr Afzal Hadeed told participants.

Organizers said they expected the participants to create a strategic plan and an overarching vision for Balkh’s future through transparent information sharing and increased trust and confidence.
