BAMYAN - The development of action plans to strengthen the role of civil society in promoting good governance in Afghanistan was a key outcome of a UN-backed event in Bamyan last week.

More than 80 people attended the event, including Governor Tahir Zohair, other provincial leaders, and members of the media, to examine the way in which civil society organizations can support good governance efforts more effectively through specific action plans.

Mr. Zohair pointed to empowered civil society organizations as among the major achievements in Afghanistan, and especially in Bamyan, which he said has become well known for its civil advocacy.

During the event, participants discussed the fight against corruption and support of the provincial administration to deliver quality services to the province’s residents.

Aileen Villareal, Head of UNAMA’s field office in Bamyan, said the event brought together local authorities and civil society partners to take stock of civil society involvement in public affairs.

“Civil society involvement in decisions taken on issues that concern the local population is one of the key standards of good governance,” said Ms. Villareal. “It is of the utmost importance that their role is promoted and strengthened so that government priorities and programs are in line with public opinion on these priorities.”

Ismael Zaki, Head of the Civil Society and Human Rights Network in Bamyan, also spoke at the event, and outlines how civil society organizations in the province are involved in several positive activities to promote good governance. He stressed that the government and international community have an important role to play in supporting the vital work of civil society organizations.

UNAMA is mandated to support the Afghan Government and the people of Afghanistan as a political mission that provides good offices; promotes coherent development support by the international community; and supports the process of peace.
