Afghan President speaks at parliament’s re-opening session

KABUL - Afghan parliament reconvened Saturday in Kabul to address, in the weeks ahead, a range of important issues, such as the approval of the government’s composition.

Speaking to lawmakers and invited guests, including UN Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Tadamichi Yamamoto, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said he would shortly introduce ministerial candidates.

In addition, he outlined some of the key activities his office intends to undertake, including the establishment of an electoral reform commission and support for nationwide work backing peace processes.

"Ensuring peace is our objective, which cannot be achieved by bloodshed,” he said. “But it can be attained through negotiations."
