Mr Page will be photographing the final weeks of campaigning for this year’s landmark presidential and provincial council elections on 20 August and charting the build up to the International Day of Peace on 21 September.

Mr Page said: ”Hopefully, we can make a difference with our images, as we did in Cambodia and Bosnia during their elections in 1993 and 1998. One image is worth a 1,000 words or is it a billion pixels? Photos freeze in people’s minds compared to the transitory vision of television”

Mr Page will also be holding a conducting a series of master class photography training for young Afghan photo-journalists, the results of which will be regularly posted on the UNAMA website.

Mr Page said: “For me, the chance to mentor afghan photojournalists is an awesome privilege, to promote their skills and passions, so they can do the job that we have usually been assigned to do”

The UN’s top envoy in Afghanistan, Kai Eide, said: “Too often the images we see of Afghanistan are those of conflict and violence. Afghanistan has another story to tell. Few people have the opportunity to see the dignity and determination with which Afghan people live under the most challenging circumstances. I hope that Mr Page’s mission in Afghanistan will help shed light on the hopes and aspirations of the Afghan people as they prepare to vote in this year’s historic polls and work towards building a lasting peace.”
