UNAMA expresses deep concern over recent disturbing incident in Iran's Sistan Province, Sarbaz District
KABUL - UNAMA expresses its deep concern over disturbing reports of an incident on 14 to 15 October in Sistan province, Sarbaz district, Kala Gan border area of Iran, with allegations that a large group of Afghan migrants were opened fire on, resulting in deaths and injuries.
UNAMA calls for thorough and transparent investigations into the alleged incident, and reminds all parties that the rights, of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers are protected by international law.
Note for background:
- During the night of 14-15 October, in Iran’s Sistan province, Sarbaz district, Kala Gan border area, close to the Iran-Pakistan border, Iranian border police reportedly fired at a group of Afghan migrants attempting to cross into Iran.
- According to a post on the X account of Haalvsh (an organization reportedly focusing on Baloch rights in Iran) up to 260 civilians may have been killed or wounded.
- On 16 October, Afghanistan’s de facto authorities stated that an investigation has started into the incident. UNAMA Human Rights Service is in contact with the DFA on the incident.
