Support of partners key to achieving UNAMA mandate

KANDAHAR - UNAMA recognized and thanked key Afghan partners for their support during 2015 at an event in the southern city of Kandahar.

Members of 17 local and community organizations, including representatives of civil society, media, youth and women’s rights groups, and officials of the Kandahar provincial peace committee and government officials joined with UNAMA staff.

“We hail your valuable contribution in the implementation of our mandate in Kandahar,” said Simon Hermes, Head of UNAMA’s Kandahar field office.

Mr. Hermes said that thousands of people in the province had been reached during 2015, with awareness raised about human rights, women’s rights, peace and reconciliation, rule of law and other issues.

While awarding certificates of appreciation, Mr. Hermes outlined the importance of partnership with local groups, including their support in overcoming challenges on the ground. He said that UNAMA looks forward to further strengthen these relationships.

UNAMA was established by the UN Security Council in March 2002 at the request of the Government of Afghanistan. Its mandate is reviewed annually, with the latest mandate renewal being on 16 March 2015 when the Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2210 (2015).

The resolution calls for UNAMA and the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan (SRSG) to continue leading and coordinating international civilian efforts in assisting Afghanistan, guided by the principle of reinforcing Afghan sovereignty, leadership and ownership.
