KABUL – The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan expresses it condolences to the victims and families affected by Friday’s mass shooting in Herat province, western Afghanistan.

On 10 April, unidentified gunmen opened fire on people who were picnicking in front of a Shia shrine in Deh Meri area, situated between Injil and Zinda Jan districts.

UNAMA has confirmed that at least 11 people were killed and 11 others injured. The casualties included women and children.

“We express our condolences to the victims and to the families affected by this terrible crime, and wish those injured a speedy recovery,” said Georgette Gagnon, Officer in Charge of UNAMA and Deputy Special-Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan.

“We ask the de facto authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and to ensure all communities across Afghanistan are protected from armed violence,” she said.
