KABUL - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan, Ján Kubiš, met with the Chairperson of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) of Afghanistan, Dr. Ahmad Yusuf Nuristani, on 24 October to discuss preparations for the 2014 elections, including issues emerging at the end of the candidate nomination period.

Afghan-led and Afghan-managed elections are at the very heart of the political transition. The Constitution must be upheld and the electoral laws respected.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) reaffirms its commitment to support the elections at the request of Afghan authorities and institutions as mandated by the UN Security Council.
