Report of the Secretary-General: The situation in Afghanistan and its implications for international peace and security

29 June 2011 - In its resolution 1974 (2011), the Security Council extended the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) until 31 March 2012 and requested the Secretary-General to report to the Council on a quarterly basis on developments in Afghanistan. The present report is the first submitted pursuant to that resolution.  The report provides an update on the activities of the United Nations in Afghanistan since my previous report dated 9 March 2011 (A/65/783-S/2011/120), as well as a summary of key political and security developments, regional and international events related to Afghanistan, and significant humanitarian, development and human rights efforts of the United Nations in Afghanistan.
