NANGARHAR: Civil society representatives urge Governor to stem corruption

NANGARHAR - Civil society representatives in eastern Nangarhar province urged Governor Gul Agha Sherzai to stem corruption and ensure good governance in government institutions last week.

In a five-point resolution of the civil society submitted to the Governor, the Civil Society Council, urged the provincial government to fully implement the Presidential Decree 45, which was issued last year to put an end to corruption and ensure accountability of government departments.

The resolution, read out by one of the civil society representatives, Najeebullah Sahibzada, said the Provincial Governor should instruct government departments to allow civil society to monitor their activities to ensure transparency.

The resolution has also called for measures to protect environment.

Governor Sherzai praised the efforts of the civil society. “In order to improve security, to ensure good offices and set up development projects in a good manner, we always conduct consultative meetings with the civil society, youth and elders,” he said.

“A special oversight committee has been established to work towards preventing land usurpation and corruption. Some government employees involved in corruption have been kicked out from their posts,” added the Governor.
