KANDAHAR: Poppy eradication campaign to start soon, says Governor

KANDAHAR - A poppy eradication campaign will start in Kandahar very soon, said Governor Dr. Toryali Wesa on Saturday.

“We will start the poppy eradication from powerful landlords and will extend it to others afterwards,” Dr. Wesa said in a poppy eradication meeting attended by the Deputy Governor and heads of sectoral groups.

The eradication campaign will start from Maiwand district and will be extended to Zhary, Panjwai, Shah Wali Kot, Spin Boldak, Takhta Pol and Arghistan districts.

“This year, the security situation is satisfactory in all the districts of Kandahar and we don’t foresee any major security obstacle during the campaign,” said Dr. Wesa.

The Governor directed chiefs of the District Police to start the campaign from the powerful people in their respective areas. Moreover, he said the Provincial Government would launch effective public awareness campaign in order to inform farmers about negative impacts of poppy.

Kandahar administration managed to exceed the given target for the eradication of poppy land last year and as a result, Dand, Arghandab and Daman districts became poppy free districts.
