KANDAHAR: Food zone programme in the offing

KANDAHAR - The food zone programme has been approved for Kandahar and will practically start in September this year. A delegation from the Ministry of Counter-Narcotics is currently visiting Kandahar in order to discuss the food zone programme which is funded by the United States Aid for International Development (USAID).

A total of US$ 20 million budget is allocated for the programme to provide alternative livelihood, raise public awareness on rule of law and prevention of poppy cultivation sectors.

Kandahar Governor, Dr. Toryali Wesa, expressed his gratitude for the approval of the food zone programme for Kandahar and said that his administration would work to solve the prevailing problems of the local population.

Wesa stressed that all those involved in the food zone programme should come from Kandahar regional and should be qualified and acquainted with the area.

The visiting delegation also met with heads of sectoral groups and received their recommendations. Most of the heads of sectoral groups recommended that more attention should be given to the treatment of drug addicts in Kandahar.
