KANDAHAR: Cyclist plans to take peace message to Saudi Arabia

KANDAHAR - A cyclist from southern Kandahar province said on Sunday he had decided to pedal his way to Saudi Arabia with a peace message.

In an exclusive interview, the head of the Kandahar Cycling Club, Amir Mohammad, 54, told Pajhwok Afghan News every Afghan desired peace in the country.

Like his compatriots, Mr. Mohammad said he wanted to convey the peace message to the Saudi government and people. He also plans offering prayers in Kaaba, considered the holiest Islamic place in the world.

Neither the government nor NGOs have provided assistance in undertaking the journey, said the Mr. Mohammad, urging national traders to help him.

The distance between Kandahar and Saudi Arabia is nearly 6,850 kilometres and he plans to cover it in 50 days. He may also use boats for crossing some ports.

Mr. Mohammad is planning to start the journey on 23 July from Kandahar through Iran and Iraq.
