DAI KUNDI: Violence against women on the rise in central highlands

Dai Kundi - Violence against women increased this year in the central provinces of the country in comparison to last year, official said in Dai Kundi province yesterday.

The Dai Kundi Provincial head of the Afghanistan Human Rights Commission, Abdul Ahad Farzam, said there was a whopping 49 per cent increase in violence against women in the central zone of the country.

He added that around 69 cases of violence against women were registered last year in the central provinces while in first eight months of this year alone the figure was 135 cases, adding that the cases included 46 family disputes, 14 cases of sexual abuse, four cases of self-immolation, three cases of killing, among others.

He said the reasons behind violence against women were joblessness, poor economic condition, old traditions, problems in rule of law, forced marriages and high wedding expenses.

The Head of Provincial Council of Bamiyan, Mohammad Aziz Shafaq, said violence against women was much higher than reported by the Afghan Human Rights Commission, adding that till date no one had been punished or arrested for committing the crime.
