29 Nov 2009 - KABUL - The international conference on Afghanistan that will be staged in London early next year provides “a very timely” opportunity to discuss the country's agenda in the wake of its recent presidential elections, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said today.
28 Nov 2009 - NEW YORK - The proposal to host an international conference on Afghanistan on 28 January 2010 in London is a very timely initiative to allow for the holding of a high level dialogue on the post-electoral agenda in Afghanistan as outlined by President Karzai in his inaugural speech on 19 November 2009.
23 Nov 2009 - 5 November 2009 - Effective immediately, the United Nations is taking additional steps to reduce risks to its national and international staff serving in Afghanistan.
This is in light of the 28 October attack against UN staff in Kabul as well as further ongoing threats.
Although details of the new measures can not be made public, it is expected that they will involve short-term relocations for some staff while additional security is being put in place.
19 Nov 2009 - NEW YORK - Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today reaffirmed the commitment of the United Nations to support Afghanistan’s progress towards peace, stability and development, as he congratulated Hamid Karzai on his inauguration as President for a second term.
“He welcomes the commitment of President Karzai to serve all Afghans, to fight corruption and to bring increased good governance, security and services to the country,” Mr. Ban’s spokesperson said in a statement.
