  • 03 Jul 2018 - NEW YORK - The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the heinous and cowardly terrorist attack that took place in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, on 1 July, which resulted in at least 19 people killed and many wounded, for which the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL/Da’esh) has claimed responsibility.
  • 02 Jul 2018 - NEW YORK - The Secretary-General condemns yesterday’s suicide attack in Jalalabad City, Nangarhar Province, that killed at least 19 civilians and wounded 20 others, including children. The majority of victims belong to Afghanistan’s small Sikh and Hindu community. The Secretary-General extends his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured.
  • 02 Jul 2018 - KABUL - The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) condemns yesterday’s attack in Jalalabad that killed at least 19 civilians, and expresses its concern about a recent spate of incidents in which civilians have been killed in attacks on schools and medical centres.

  • 19 Jun 2018 - NEW YORK - The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the two heinous and cowardly terrorist attacks that took place in Nangarhar, Afghanistan, on 16 and 17 June, which resulted in at least 43 people killed and 45 injured.  For one of those attacks, the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL/Da’esh) has claimed responsibility.

  • 11 Jun 2018 - NEW YORK - The members of the Security Council welcomed the announcement by the Government of Afghanistan on 7 June of a temporary ceasefire with the Taliban for the end of Ramadan and the Eid al-Fitr holiday. The members of the Security Council also welcomed the subsequent announcement by the Taliban of a three-day partial ceasefire, urging them to reciprocate the Government’s temporary ceasefire in full.
  • 09 Jun 2018 - NEW YORK - The Secretary-General welcomes the announcement by the Taliban of a three-day partial  ceasefire during the Eid al-Fitr holiday. This follows the recent announcement by the Government of Afghanistan that it will begin a seven-day ceasefire during the upcoming holiday. The Secretary-General strongly believes that there is no military solution to this conflict and that only a political settlement can bring an end to the suffering in Afghanistan.

The Secretary-General urges the Taliban to reciprocate the temporary ceasefire and accept President Ashraf Ghani’s peace offer to commence direct talks to bring an end to the long suffering of the Afghan people.
