UNAMA joins Afghanistan Human Rights Film Festival

KABUL - The 2015 Afghanistan Human Rights Film Festival (AHRF) concluded today on World Human Rights Day with films by international and Afghan filmmakers being shown to audiences in UNAMA venues.

With more than 50 films, “the festival is an opportunity for Afghans to discover hope, dream and explore,” said Festival Director Malek Shafi’i.

This year's festival carried a special significance, with film showings spread across the city at different venues after a 2014 suicide bombing gutted the main venue previously used by the festival.

“Despite the security situation, and despite the fact that many Afghan filmmakers have left the country, a new generation of young filmmakers is still active and producing stories with their own means,” said Mr. Shafi’i. “What is most admirable is that active visual storytellers remain in the country and are not giving up on telling the stories of the voiceless and narrating the human rights reality of Afghanistan and the region.”

UNAMA was determined to show solidarity with the festival and the filmmakers by agreeing to be a venue for films to be shown.
