UNAMA chief meets with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister and other high-ranking officials
TEHRAN - Nicholas Haysom, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, met on Saturday in Tehran with Ibrahim Rahimpour, the Deputy Foreign Minister of Islamic Republic of Iran.
Mr. Haysom is stressing the need for Afghanistan's neighbours to give their full support to an Afghan-led peace process. Other important areas of bilateral and multilateral engagement between Afghanistan and Iran include counter narcotic efforts, refugees, socio-economic development and the environment.
During his two-day visit to Islamic Republic of Iran, Mr. Haysom is scheduled to meet with senior Iranian and other officials as part of the United Nation’s work to support Afghanistan’s regional engagement. He is accompanied by the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan, Tadamichi Yamamoto.
This is Mr. Haysom’s first visit to Tehran as the head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). He has previously visited Tehran on two occasions as the Deputy Head of the UN mission in Afghanistan.
