The UN will continue to support Afghanistan, says head of Political Affairs

KABUL - As Afghans face several challenges, especially in the economy and in security, the United Nations will continue to support the Government and people of Afghanistan, said the UN’s top Political Affairs envoy in a trip to Kabul today.

Jeffrey Feltman, the Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, met in Kabul with several of Afghanistan’s leaders, including President Ashraf Ghani, Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Hekmat Karzai, to discuss the current situation in the country.

Mr. Feltman also met with UNAMA staff to express appreciation for their dedication surrounding the events that unfolded in Kunduz during the past several months, when the city fell to anti-government elements. In addition, he paid tribute to Toorpeki Ulfat, who was murdered in Kandahar in October, and commended her for her tireless work in human rights.

Coming up on 21 December, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Nicholas Haysom, will present an update on the situation in the country to the Security Council.

That briefing, which will be broadcast live from New York, can be watched on UN Web TV at http://webtv.un.org/.
