UN Secretary-General meets with Afghanistan Chief Executive

NEW YORK - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met today with Afghanistan Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah to discuss the work undertaken in the first year of the National Unity Government and the current situation in the country.

In the meeting, the Secretary-General expressed appreciation for the political, economic and social reform agenda of the Government of Afghanistan, and the need for continued international support for the country.

As both leaders agreed on the priority of a political solution to the conflict as the only durable mechanism for peace, Mr. Ban expressed his support for an Afghan-led peace process and emphasized the commitment of the United Nations to Afghanistan and its people.
