Religious scholars in the south support Government peace efforts

KANDAHAR - Noted religious scholars from southern provinces of Afghanistan have called on the international community to mount pressure on Afghanistan’s “neighbours” to end their support to the armed insurgents fighting in Afghanistan.

The Ulema (religious scholars) came together at a Regional Ulema Peace Jirga in Kandahar to discuss the current efforts for peace in the country and assured the Afghan Government of their full cooperation.

“Ulema can play a significant role in bringing peace in Afghanistan because they enjoy particular respect in the society and the Government should work with them to use their influence for peacemaking,” said Maulwi Nek Mohammad, a member of Ulema High Council of Afghanistan.

The Kandahar Governor, Dr. Toryali Wesa on the occasion read out the special message of the President of Afghanistan. “Peace and security are fundamental needs for our society; however, peace is desperately felt amongst our nation after suffering for three decades of war. If today you ask anyone in the country about his/her primary need, he/she will respond with “peace and security” said the President’s message.

In their nineteen point declaration prepared at the end of Jirga, they also demanded for creating job opportunities, establishing Madrasas, (religious schools) in the country and mediatory role of other Islamic countries in negotiations with Taliban leaders as well as delisting of Taliban leaders from the UN list of sanctions.

The Jirga was organized by the Kandahar Ulema Council in assistance with the Kandahar Governor Office. It was attended by hundreds of Ulemas (religious scholars) from across the southern region and the representatives of Governors of southern provinces, Security Coordinator, Assadullah Khalid, Minister for Fronteir and Tribal Affairs and other senior officials. The southern provinces include Kandahar, Helmand, Nimroz, Uruzgan, Zabul and Dai Kundi.
