NEW YORK, 18 December 2014 – The United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Nicholas Haysom, briefed the Security Council today on the Secretary-General’s latest report regarding the situation in the country and the world body’s recent work there.

9 December 2014 - The present report is submitted pursuant to General Assembly resolution 68/11 and Security Council resolution 2145 (2014), by which I was requested to report every three months on developments in Afghanistan.The report provides an update on the activities of the United Nations in Afghanistan, including significant humanitarian, development and human rights efforts, since my previous report was issued on 9 September 2014 (A/69/540-S/2014/656).It also provides a summary of key political and security developments and regional and international events related to Afghanistan. KABUL, 18 September 2014 – With the results of its presidential election due to be announced within days but with no political agreement on a government of political unity in place, the top United Nations official in Afghanistan today briefed the world body’s Security Council on the country’s progress and challenges – both immediate and longer-term – and the important role to be played by a new administration.

The report provides an update on the activities of the United Nations in Afghanistan, including significant humanitarian, development and human rights efforts, since his previous report was issued on 18 June 2014 (A/68/910-S/2014/420).
