Video remarks on the 81st Anniversary of the United Nations

by the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Rabab Fatima

Kabul, 24 October 2026

As-salamu alaikum,

Today, the United Nations marks its 81st anniversary.

Born from the devastation of war, the United Nations was created as an instrument of hope, grounded in the belief that peace is possible through dialogue, cooperation, and our shared humanity.

Afghanistan has been part of that story since joining the UN in 1946. For nearly eight decades, the United Nations has stood alongside the Afghan people through times of conflict and hardship, as well as periods of progress and opportunity.

When disasters struck, when communities faced drought, displacement, conflict, or urgent humanitarian needs, the United Nations and its partners have been here to support.

And throughout the decades, one thing has remained constant: the determination of the Afghan people.

Across Afghanistan, women and men, young people, community leaders, teachers, health workers, and humanitarians have continued to serve their communities, overcoming so many challenges. Their commitment is a source of hope and inspiration.

As I begin my responsibilities in Afghanistan, I do so with deep respect for the Afghan people, your culture and rich heritage, and with a commitment to listen, engage, and work alongside you.

The challenges facing Afghanistan are significant, but the talents, aspirations, and potential of its people are even greater.

The United Nations remains committed to supporting the people of Afghanistan, advocating for dignity, opportunity, and the well-being of all Afghans.

On this United Nations Day, let us look to the future with confidence.

The future of Afghanistan belongs to its people, and the United Nations will remain a committed partner as Afghans shape that future.

Thank you.
