UNAMA expresses concern over detention of Journalists

KABUL - The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) expresses serious concern over the detention of at least three journalists by Afghanistan’s de facto authorities on unspecified charges.

UNAMA is also concerned about reports of assaults against journalists and confiscation of property during search operations by the de facto authorities.

UNAMA calls for clarification of the legal basis and any charges against the detained journalists, and for due process and the rights of persons detained to be respected at all times.

A free, independent, and safe press is essential for transparency, accountability, and the well-being of Afghan society.

UNAMA urges the de facto authorities to uphold their obligations under international human rights law and ensure that journalists can do their work without fear of intimidation, harassment, or reprisal.
