UN Security Council extends UNAMA mandate for three months

UNSC voting Resolution 2818 (2026)

On 16 March, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2818 (2026), extending UNAMA’s mandate for an additional three months, until 17 June 2026, with no changes to its current operational provisions.

The Council reaffirmed its full support for the work of UNAMA, welcomed the Mission’s efforts to implement its mandated tasks and priorities and underscored the need for its continued presence.

In view of requests from some Member States to review UNAMA’s mandate, the Council opted for a short three‑month extension to allow sufficient time for further discussions ahead of a decision in June.

The Council called on donors to increase their support to Afghanistan and reiterated its call on the de facto authorities to reverse all policies restricting women and girls’ rights, including on access of UN female national staff to UN premises.
