Afghanistan needs sustained international support, says UN envoy

NEW YORK - Continued international engagement in Afghanistan is critical to avoid waves of people from leaving the country, United Nations envoy Nicholas Haysom said in a UN radio interview broadcast from New York this week.

Mr. Haysom, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), says Afghans are counting on the support of the international community as they face ongoing security, economic and political challenges.

Mr Haysom is in New York to participate in high-level meetings during the annual UN General Assembly which begins next week. He has also briefed the Security Council.
