Statement by Kai Eide, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan

KABUL - This morning, insurgents carried out coordinated attacks against government institutions in Kabul.

The details of the attack and the number of people killed and injured are still emerging.

The location of the attack, in central Kabul, at a time when many civilians were present, demonstrates a staggering disregard for civilian lives.

There can be no justification for endangering the lives of so many people and I condemn these attacks in the strongest possible terms.

Such attacks will not deter us from continuing our support for the people of Afghanistan and its government institutions.

My thoughts, along with the whole UN family in Afghanistan, remain with all those who have suffered this morning.
