Statement of the UN Secretary-General on the Afghan elections

2 November 2009 - I welcome today’s decision by Afghanistan’s Independent Election Commission to forego a run-off vote and to declare Hamid Karzai as the winner of the 2009 presidential elections. I congratulate President Karzai.

On 2 November 2009 Afghanistan's Independent Election Commission declared Hamid Karzai as president-elect. A run-off had been called for 7 November 2009 but Dr Abdullah Abdullah withdrew from the race on 1 November 2009. The 20 August 2009 presidential and provincial council elections were organized by Afghanistan's Independent Election Commission.

The support of the international community was mobilized and coordinated by UNAMA and the UNDP/ELECT project.
