UN envoy inaugurates water supply projects for Herat displaced

HERAT - More than 20,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) living in the Maslakh settlement of Herat province will benefit from five UN-supported potable drinking water projects formally inaugurated in a ceremony this week by the UN’s top envoy to Afghanistan, Tadamichi Yamamoto.

“We, the United Nations family, are determined to assist the government to help IDPs,” said Tadamichi Yamamoto, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

The water supply project, facilitated by UN-Habitat in Herat, is part of the world body’s overall work to support the government’s national plan to achieve durable solutions for IDPs. UN-Habitat’s Maslakh water project is part of the agency’s Local Integration of Vulnerable and Excluded Uprooted People (LIVE-UP) programme, which also includes plans to build three community centers and 250 shelters in Maslakh.

UN-Habitat is the United Nations programme that promotes socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all. It is is part of the UN family in Afghanistan.

More than 20 different UN entities are present in the country, working to support the Afghan government’s priorities through a broad spectrum of development and humanitarian activities, including through support for development planning, resource mobilization, and coordination of international donors and organizations.

UNAMA has a mandate to lead and coordinate international civilian efforts, to support the efforts of the Afghan government and to improve governance and the rule of law. It does so as part of broad range of interventions made by the political mission to support the Afghan Government and the people of Afghanistan through its good offices and work to promote: coherent development; the process of peace and reconciliation; human rights and protection of civilians in armed conflict, as well as regional cooperation.
