KANDAHAR: US$ 4.5 million to be spent for urban development

KANDAHAR - The United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-HABITAT) will soon have a mega project for urban development in Afghanistan’s southern city of Kandahar.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, the country director of UN-HABITAT, Yan Taxin, said that the UN agency would provide better public services for Kandahar with financial support from Japan. US$ 4.5 million will be allocated for the project which will also provide job opportunities for local residents.

At the press conference, Kandahar’s Mayor Mohammad Omar said that the money would be spent through Kandahar municipality and the authorities would propose and implement the projects.

“In this plan, for the coming two years we will work in different sectors like city cleaning, construction of pedestrian paths, rehabilitation of roads, capacity building of the staff, installing solar street lights and other sectors,” Mr. Omar explained.
