INTERNATIONAL WOMAN’S DAY: Message of Ján Kubiš, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General

KABUL - In this historically significant year for Afghanistan, two important political processes are underway that will determine the success of the country’s future stability: preparations for the 2014 elections and the dialogue on national reconciliation. They will succeed only if the voices and concerns of women are heard. When given a chance to participate in political life, women have proved to be effective at peace making and peace building. Afghan women must have a chance to participate, must have their say.

For too long war has devastated Afghanistan and brought particular misery to the most vulnerable: Afghan mothers and their children. Women have the vision and the power to bring change and reshape the future of Afghanistan, a peaceful future for their children that will ensure development for their country. We must all allow them to act out this vision.
