Youth participate in anti-HIV/AIDS campaign in Kunduz

11 May 2011 – The continuing campaign to spread awareness about HIV/AIDS has moved to Afghanistan’s regions. Last week in Kunduz about fifty girls graduated from a four-day HIV/AIDS awareness workshop.

The workshop was supported by the Youth Information and Communication Center (YICC) and UNICEF.

“Weak awareness of the public is the main cause of HIV/AIDS prevalence in the society,” said the head of YICC, Ajmal Shahpor.

One result of the workshop is that the girls who attended, mostly from the Teacher Training Institute at Kunduz University, committed to circulate information about HIV/AIDS among their classmates.

According to Dr. Saifullah Shenwari, a manager of the Kunduz Public Health Department’s HIV/AIDS section, there are about 630 known cases of HIV/AIDS in Afghanistan. Five people with confirmed cases reside in Kunduz province.
