United Nations convenes meeting on strengthening Presidential election audit

KABUL - With the support of both of the candidates in Afghanistan’s Presidential election, the United Nations convened a meeting this morning at the headquarters of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) to strengthen the audit of run-off results.

Participants included all of the stakeholders involved in the comprehensive audit, including the UN, the IEC, international and domestic observers and the supervisors from each of the candidates' teams of agent representatives.

The purpose of the meeting was to capture best practices developed during the last six days of auditing, to refine the procedure for dispute resolution, improve security access protocols, and further clarify the roles of the various participants. This will help the audit to proceed more rapidly and in an orderly and respectful environment.

Following this meeting, which was conducted in a frank and constructive manner, a small group of representatives from the campaign teams and officials from the IEC and the UN Development Programme’s Enhancing Legal And Electoral Capacity For Tomorrow II (UNDP ELECT II) are meeting this afternoon to formalise a detailed protocol on procedures that will be put into effect on Thursday morning when the physical audit resumes.
