UNAMA welcomes submission of electoral reform recommendations

KABUL - The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) welcomes today’s submission of the final recommendations of the Special Electoral Reform Commission to the National Unity Government.

UNAMA commends the Commission for working intensively to deliver on its mandate, for consulting broadly with key electoral stakeholders, and for providing comprehensive proposals to strengthen the integrity, inclusiveness and sustainability of the electoral process.

UNAMA encourages the relevant Afghan authorities to make timely decisions to expedite the electoral reform process, on the basis of SERC’s recommendations. Comprehensive electoral reforms are essential to restore the confidence of the Afghan people in the democratic process and electoral institutions.

The reform process is Afghan-owned and Afghan-led. The United Nations provided technical advice and support, with Tadamichi Yamamoto, the Secretary-General’s Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan, serving as a non-voting member of the Commission.
