UNAMA expresses condolences for victims in Kunar province

KABUL - The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) expresses its condolences to the families of the civilians killed and injured in airstrikes in the country’s eastern province of Kunar yesterday.

According to initial reports, at least eight civilians were killed and another ten injured – mainly women and children – in a military operation conducted by the Afghan National Security Forces and the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in the remote Badel valley area of Kunar’s Narang district.

“All efforts should be taken to ensure civilians are protected during military operations. I once again strongly urge the parties to the conflict to do everything in their power to avoid any actions that may lead to civilian casualties,” said the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of UNAMA, Ján Kubiš.

While noting that both a Presidential delegation and ISAF are separately investigating the incident, the Mission highlights the need for prompt, thorough and transparent investigations.

The UN Mission wishes a speedy recovery for the injured.
