NEW YORK - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon strongly condemns the attack involving the compound of the International Organization for Migration that took place in Kabul on Friday, the UN chief's spokesperson said in a statement.

"He notes that Afghan security forces have been responding to the attack, for which the Taliban have claimed responsibility," the spokesperson added.

The Secretary-General greatly regrets the casualties to Afghans and to international aid workers caught in the attack, the spokesperson continued, noting that Mr. Ban extends his heartfelt sympathies to those injured and calls upon all parties to make every effort to bring the violence to an end and work towards sustainable peace in Afghanistan
