18 April 2011 – United Nations aid agencies and partner organizations in northeastern Afghanistan today strengthened the regional contingency plan in case of a natural or human induced disaster.

The main objective of this inter-agency contingency plan is to improve the quality, effectiveness, appropriateness and timeliness of delivering aid, said the regional UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Kunduz which also oversees aid in Baghlan, Takhar and Badakhshan.

In April 2010 and 2009, heavy rains and melting snow caused the Amoo River to flood, displacing hundreds of families in the province.

Today’s discussions, held at the monthly aid coordination meeting overseen by OCHA, included staff from the UN and its partners, including the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS).
